Angela Paxton Files for Divorce from Texas AG Ken Paxton, Citing 'Biblical Grounds' and Alleged Adultery
Angela Paxton, a Texas state senator and wife of Attorney General Ken Paxton, announced Thursday that she is filing for divorce after 38 years of marriage, citing “biblical grounds” and “recent discoveries.” The announcement comes as Ken Paxton campaigns to challenge Senator John Cornyn in next year’s Republican Senate primary.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Angela Paxton wrote, “I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation. But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage.” Court documents obtained by CNN claim the attorney general committed adultery and that the couple has lived apart since around June 1, 2024.
Ken Paxton responded in a separate X post, referencing “countless political attacks and public scrutiny,” and said the couple had agreed to “start a new chapter” in their lives. “I remain committed to supporting our amazing children and grandchildren,” he added, requesting prayers and privacy.
The divorce filing threatens to complicate Paxton’s Senate bid, which has already drawn national attention. Democrats see him as a vulnerable candidate, and the primary is expected to be one of the most contentious in the country.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) condemned Paxton in a harsh statement, with communications director Joanna Rodriguez saying, “What Ken Paxton has put his family through is truly repulsive and disgusting. No one should have to endure what Angela Paxton has, and we pray for her as she chooses to stand up for herself and her family during this difficult time.”
Ken Paxton, a staunch ally of Donald Trump, has long been a controversial figure in Texas politics. Since becoming attorney general in 2015, he has filed numerous lawsuits against federal policies under both Presidents Obama and Biden. He was impeached by the Texas House in 2023 after requesting a $3.3 million taxpayer-funded settlement in a whistleblower case involving bribery allegations. Though acquitted in a Senate trial led by his political allies, the scandal included accusations of an extramarital affair with a woman linked to the real estate developer at the center of the case.
Angela Paxton attended her husband’s impeachment trial but was barred from voting. Now, her public split from him could become a focal point in the heated GOP primary.
When asked about the news, Senator Cornyn offered little comment, calling it “a private matter.” However, his campaign account on X shared a local report highlighting Angela Paxton’s filing along with the NRSC’s sharp rebuke of her husband.
